  • What Makes a Man MASCULINE? A Deep Dive into Masculinity

Last updated on April 18, 2026

Defining Masculinity

Masculinity is a complex and multifaceted concept that has been debated and redefined over time. At its core, masculinity refers to the set of attributes, behaviors, and roles associated with men and boys.

However, traditional definitions of masculinity often focus on personality traits or skills, such as stoicism, competitiveness, and aggression. Amidst ongoing debates and cultural shifts, it is crucial to define masculinity in a way that provides a clearer understanding of what it means to be a man today.

A more nuanced definition of masculinity is needed, one that can be true for all men and provides a potential for all men to express their masculinity. This definition should take into account the diversity of human experiences and the complexity of individual personalities.

One possible definition of masculinity is the possession of certain qualities or attributes that are typically associated with men, such as assertiveness, courage, and strength. However, these traits are not unique to men and can be found in women as well. Moreover, not all men possess these traits, and not all women lack them.

A more inclusive definition of masculinity might focus on the idea of maturity and responsibility. Manhood is a distinction of maturity, and it is a calling—a responsibility. To be a man is to take on a responsibility of maturity, to learn to answer the call of responsibility, and to bear responsibility.

Masculinity has evolved significantly over time, influenced by cultural, social, and economic factors. In ancient times, masculinity was often associated with physical strength, courage, and aggression.

However, as societies became more complex and urbanized, new forms of masculinity emerged. Societal expectations and pressures shape masculine behavior, often leading to traditional masculine behaviors like aggression and competition.

In modern times, masculinity has become more nuanced and diverse, with different cultures and subcultures defining masculinity in their own ways. The rise of feminism and the discussion of toxic masculinity is a common enemy of this blog and we need to remember what masculinity really is. This is what this article is all about.

Historical Perspectives on Masculinity

The concept of masculinity has evolved over time, with different cultures and societies having their own unique definitions and expectations. In ancient Greece, masculinity was a blend of physical strength, courage, and intellectual pursuits.

Greek heroes like Hercules embodied the ideal masculine traits of bravery and physical prowess, while philosophers like Socrates and Plato highlighted the importance of wisdom and rationality.

Fast forward to medieval Europe, and masculinity took on the chivalric ideals of knighthood. A masculine man was expected to be honorable, loyal, and skilled in combat, protecting the weak and upholding justice.

The Industrial Revolution brought another shift, associating masculinity with industrial labor and the ability to provide for one’s family. Men were seen as the breadwinners, working long hours in factories to support their households.

The 20th century saw the feminist movement challenge these traditional notions of masculinity, leading to a reevaluation of what it means to be a man. This is where I come in and tell you all... do not let SOCIETY tell you how to be a man.

Today, there is a growing recognition of the diversity of masculine experiences and the need to redefine masculinity for the modern era. By examining the ways in which masculinity has been defined and redefined over time, we can gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of masculine identity.

Historical perspectives on masculinity highlight the importance of understanding the cultural and social contexts in which masculinity is constructed, allowing us to appreciate the rich tapestry of masculine expression throughout history.

A Masculine Man Knows His Purpose

I don’t care if you don’t know your outlet. I don’t care if you don’t know your missions. I don’t even care if you work at Wendy’s and you hate your job.

Find out your purpose now. Do it as this is the very first task I give all of my readers in my hardcover book.

The point is you need a healthy habit that keeps you sane. That habit you can make your purpose for the time being if you don’t know your masculine purpose.

A man decides his high status destiny as I heard one of my coaches say.

He decides what his direction is. His purpose puts a fire in his stomach. It fires him up. It gets him excited to live life. He KNOWS his missions!

Masculine qualities like assertiveness and courage are essential for a man to find and pursue his purpose. Focus on achieving your goals and responsibilities in the present moment.

True masculinity involves a commitment to living authentically and purposefully in the here and now. So again, even if you don’t know your missions, start journaling TODAY.

You can and you will find out your missions. Write down what brings you joy. Write down what gives you passion. Write down your expertise.

Follow that. And have masculine power, which is a part of Machiavellianism.

A Masculine Man Has a Backbone

A man must stand his ground. A man must have a killer instinct. A man must have a powerful presence that shows his alpha male presence.

Do you know what I'm getting at here? As you know if you've read 77 Ways to Develop a Masculine Mindset, you know that there are light and dark sides to masculinity.

A man must know his dark side. That gives him a backbone. That gives him a killer instinct. That gives him a certain type of energy that people just look at him and you say to yourself...

"That guy is a bad motherfucker and he doesn't need to prove it."

With that said, I want all of you to understand that this right here is what makes a man masculine. This is why you must know your power as I say consistently.

Masculinity means you control your power. You don't lose control, which leads me to my next point...

Masculine Men Have Controlled Power and Masculine Qualities

Now listen to me when I say this, I don't mean you become a fucking violent passive aggressive dick.

Here's what I mean by controlled power. I mean you a fire within you. It's the Thumos in your masculine spirit.

I want to remind you all the three components to masculinity:

  • Thumos
  • Epithumia
  • Nous

You need to know what comes with masculinity. Thumos is your will to push forward, take big risks, because success loves speed. It's assertiveness. This is controlled power which includes your dark side.

Epithumia is the animalistic side to yourself. It's that part of you that wants to go meet girls and be a challenge to them which turns them on.

Nous is your intellect. Think of it like situational awareness. You understand others much better. This ties in to learning pick-up the right way. You get more socially calibrated.

With all of that said, you can see why you need to know your power. I would hope this motivates you to check out my podcast if you haven't heard it already.

A Masculine Man is Calm Under Pressure

Think of a calm lion that protects its family. Think of the leader of the family. And you know that when shit gets real, the leader is calm.

A man must have emotional control in tough situations. A man must be calm when he is faced with a hard situation at work.

More importantly, this ties in to having controlled power. You know you can be an aggressive motherfucker, but you choose the high road.

You need to choose to be calm even when someone threatens your ego.

This right here makes you super attractive to girls when you choose to be the bigger man, you have no idea how attractive this is.

A Masculine Man is As Good as His Word

If you flake, you are not a masculine man. You are a complacent, feminine, comfortable motherfucker.

If you want people to TRUST you, more importantly, if you want to trust yourself, I suggest you take a hard look in the mirror and start keeping promises you make.

I honestly have no clue how men fall in to the trap of flaking on ANYONE.

Because this is the number one quality of a masculine man. A masculine man keeps his fucking word.

So if you have ever flaked, start calling yourself the fuck out because this is an easy fix. You need to be consistent with yourself before you bring women in the picture because if they see any inconsistencies with your word…

She will break up with you. And I will not go in to details, I have SEEN girls lose trust in men who are liars and they use girls. Be the man that she wants to admire and can brag to her friends about you.

I know I teach guys how to be a player, but here’s the caveat to that my friends. Girls lose trust in assholes that use them. That is not a masculine man.

If you date multiple women, just be HONEST with them about who you are seeing. Don’t lie to them. Have inner congruence.

A Masculine Man is a Leader to Everyone He Meets

Think of the movie 300 my friends. When I was very young, I was pulled towards this movie, and I saw this with my dad.

We both loved it. We loved the sheer power of every scene where the fighters would fight to die for their kind.

A truly masculine man embodies leadership, responsibility, and emotional depth, transcending mere physical strength to include a nurturing spirit and confidence.

When you lead, you are MASCULINE. If you don’t have anyone to lead, then I suggest you start out by following your own lead. Be your own man as I always say consistently.

A man leads his people fearlessly. A man leads his kind, especially if you have a family. A man dies for his people.

Makes me think of a friend who was in the marines named Drew, he unfortunately passed away too soon. He had PTSD. He saw war in the marines.

A Masculine Man Must Know What He Can Control

A man controls his thoughts, words, and actions to achieve his masculine purpose. This right here is stoicism.

Human beings are naturally predisposed to seek pleasure and avoid pain, which highlights the challenges faced in achieving self-discipline in a world inundated with distractions and instant gratification.

It originated in Ancient Greece. Stoic philosophy states you know what you can control and you accept what you cannot control.

More importantly, you realize that you cannot control anyone's perception of you. You accept that not all people will like you.

I want you all to understand something, even though I touch upon frame control on my blog, you should NEVER try to control the frame. Instead try less, then you actually get what you want. It's counterintuitive on how it works.

A  Masculine Man Works Out Consistently

Attractive Body

Societal pressures and media representations often influence the desire for a muscular body, associating it with traditional masculine ideals, strength, and confidence.

It makes a man masculine because you now choose hard over easy. You choose to better yourself and take care of your body.

You watch what you eat because we all know that it starts with your food intake. I don’t like the word diet. It implies temporary solution.

You need to make working out a lifestyle. I want all of my readers who do not workout to take this in to consideration…

Only 23% of Americans are getting the actual physical activity that they really need for their body. Don’t believe me? Read this here.

This makes me fucking sick that I found this out. This makes me want to call out all of you lazy people out there to grab your balls and do what’s best for you.

As we all know, working out is the gateway to discipline. Don’t be a casualty in war and give up on your fitness.

I know I’m being harsh on you, but I cannot be your coach unless I tell you like it is. You need a workout routine, and not having one, honestly you are choosing the easy way out.

A Masculine Man Takes Courageous Action Every Day

Follow Your Fears

How to Take Courageous Action: Step-by-Step Guide to Decisiveness

A man has courage. What is courage? Courage is you face your fears with a full heart. You know what scares you but you do it.

In the modern world, an aversion to risk can hinder personal growth and success, with fear of failure and rejection being common barriers that individuals face while navigating life's challenges.

Taking action combined with courage is you know that what you are about to do scares the hell out of you, but you still do it.

What makes a man masculine? He goes in to the cave he fears. He knows in that cave he finds his masculine purpose.

More importantly, he doesn’t let his inner bitch make him not take action.

He fights his inner critic that wants to give up on his masculine purpose. He says, “Bro, stop avoiding what you know you gotta do and DO IT.”

Masculinity goes TOWARDS what he doesn’t want to do. A man does what he must do, even if it’s something that scares him shitless.

That means if you see a girl who you find attractive, you approach her with a full heart. Tell her, “I’m a little nervous, but you are cute as fuck and I had to meet you. What’s your name?”

What a powerful opener, it’s bold, and it’s courageous.

The Impact of Toxic Masculinity

Toxic masculinity refers to the negative and limiting aspects of traditional masculine norms. It is characterized by aggression, dominance, and a lack of emotional expression. Toxic masculinity can have serious consequences, including violence, aggression, and mental health problems.

Hypermasculinity and traditional masculine norms can also contribute to behaviors like sexual assault. Societal pressures and constructs surrounding masculinity often lead to harmful attitudes toward women, viewing them as objects rather than equals, which can result in acts of sexual violence.

Toxic masculinity is often perpetuated by societal expectations and cultural norms. Men are socialized to conform to certain masculine norms, which can lead to the suppression of emotions and the adoption of aggressive behaviors.

However, there is a growing movement to redefine masculinity and promote healthier forms of masculine expression. This movement emphasizes the importance of emotional intelligence, empathy, and vulnerability, and encourages men to express themselves in a more authentic and nuanced way.

My honest thoughts on toxic masculinity is it's a term that is made-up due to crimes committed that are ACTUALLY toxic. If you've read my manosphere article, understand that there are REAL toxic monsters in the world, but to put it next to a term such as masculinity? It starts shaming men which in my mind is societal manipulation. This right here is why you don't go down the "Black Pill" rabbit hole.

The Role of Masculine Men in Society

Masculine men play a crucial role in society, serving as role models and leaders in their communities. They are often expected to embody traditional masculine traits, such as strength, courage, and assertiveness. However, the role of masculine men in society is not limited to these traditional expectations.

The role of masculine men in society is complex and multifaceted, and requires a nuanced understanding of the ways in which masculinity is constructed and performed. By examining the role of masculine men in society, we can gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which masculinity shapes our social and cultural norms.

The role of masculine men in society is not fixed, but rather is subject to change and evolution over time. As our understanding of masculinity evolves, so too does the role of masculine men in society. By embracing a more inclusive and diverse definition of masculinity, men can play a vital role in creating a better future for all.

The most important point is to not have a fixed mindset on the term "Masculinity" and assume that this is a bad term because it's not. A common enemy of the masculine mindset blog is making narrow minded assumptions like this blog is for misoygnists. So please leave your hatred at home if you hate this article.

Masculinity in Different Cultures

Masculinity is defined and expressed differently in various cultures around the world. In some cultures, masculinity is associated with physical strength and aggression, while in others, it is defined by emotional intelligence and vulnerability.

In many traditional societies, masculinity is closely tied to male dominance and patriarchy. However, in more modern and egalitarian societies, masculinity is often redefined to emphasize equality and mutual respect between men and women.

The concept of masculinity is also influenced by cultural and historical contexts. For example, in ancient Greece, masculinity was associated with intellectual and artistic pursuits, while in modern times, it is often defined by physical strength and athletic ability.

The Takeaway: What Makes a Man Masculine?

You are now realizing what defines masculinity from the mindset of just being a congruent man.

And I'm sure you learned how society twists this term to make it sound bad. Don't let that get in your head.

You even learned about masculine traits, the evolution of masculinity and even historical contexts.

This article is a deep dive in to masculinity as to what makes a man masculine. And you must understand that this is my specialty.

I have 77 ways you can find out on how to be the best man possible on Amazon. But even if you don't want to get my hardcover book, I don't give a fuck.

A man also doesn't care to be liked by everyone. He knows that his wisdom may be polarizing to the average, comfortable and convenient guy.

So even though some of these might be hard for you to accept, that's how I roll on my podcast and on my blog.

I always hold up a mirror. Life is a mirror, not a window. If I reflected something that you are NOT doing.

Forgive yourself, but start improving because EVERYONE can improve.

Don't act like you have everything figured out. I'll tell you what, I've recently realized I still have work to do on living with an open heart because part of me doesn't want to.

That's why if you've been through my recent podcast news article, I've been doing shadow work.

This article is dedicated to The Unapologetic Man, Mark Sing and also cannot forget the LEGEND Joseph Liverman.
